ALESSANDRO CASINI

I obtained the laurea magistrale in Economics from the University of Siena in 2011. Afterwards, I did the MSc in Economics at Barcelona Graduate School of Economics/Pompeu Fabra and graduated in 2012. I then moved to the US for the PhD. I graduated from Boston University in 2019. My field is Econometrics, or more precisely, Macroeconometrics and Time Series Econometrics. During the 2018/19 job market I accepted an offer for Assistant Professor from the University of Rome Tor Vergata. I am still here, and I am in the bureaucratic process to pass Associate Professor next year.

I think it is an exciting time to choose Economics.  There is high demand from both the academic profession and industry. Regarding my field, I see lots of interest from the private sector for recent econometric methods and developments based on machine learning, data science and big data. These are great opportunities for an economist with a quantitative profile. The academic community is also growing fast. For example, here in Tor Vergata we have started to participate in the international job market regularly and we hire one or two PhD job market candidate on average each year.

Personally, I took off from Siena and so I can only spend very good words about studying Economics there. I had always been interested in numbers and economic statistics (just the ones reported in the news). It is in Siena where I decided to go for Economics and where I gained a good technical background which proved to be useful when I went on studying abroad for the MSc and PhD. I was fortunate to have an advisor and letter writers who helped me to get admitted to good MSc and PhD programs. Looking back, I remember I sometimes felt overwhelmed by the subject. But that also made things more challenging and exciting. Starting from Siena, if a student has the right motivation and ambition, she/he can make a fantastic career.
